Harnessing hydration in the workplace

How can hydration boost the health and well-being of your employees, all year round?

New Year, new you?

Many of us will have started this year making virtuous resolutions to join the gym or eat healthier, however, research shows that only one in 10 will maintain their goal to the end of the year.

How are you supporting your employees to stay on track with their health goals in 2020?

Whether you believe in the “New Year, new you” mantra or not, it is important that workplaces provide an environment that helps boost employee health and well-being all year round.

How does proper hydration impact your employees?

Vowing to drink more water is a common goal.

Despite this, over half of office workers admit to drinking less than the recommended two litres of water a day and over a third say not drinking enough water negatively impacts their productivity*.

So, how does proper hydration impact your employees?

Water consumption has a huge impact on happiness, health and efficiency, helping to…

1.         Support mental performance

2.         Combat fatigue

3.         Boost productivity

For workplaces looking to reap the benefits of a happy and hydrated workforce, make water a priority in the office with these simple steps:

1. Convenience is king:

We all know how easy it is to forget about drinking enough water. Office water coolers should be positioned across the workplace – in fact, 77% of Facilities Managers say that having fresh, filtered water readily available on all floors and close to desks is key to ensuring a healthy and happy workforce*.

2. Make space to hydrate

Empower employees to take responsibility for their own wellbeing by incorporating water facilities into a social area with comfy chairs. It’s a great way to encourage workers to relax, take time away from their desk and rehydrate.

3. No excuse for single-use:

Another way to encourage employees to stay hydrated is by offering refillable filtered water bottles, such as BRITA Wave bottles. This initiative can help eliminate the need for single-use plastic bottles – in turn making cost savings for the business and enabling employees to reduce their impact on the environment. This is something that’s increasingly important, with the majority of Generation Z and Millennials saying they would feel proud to work at a company that prioritises sustainability*.

4. Hydration-stations with flavour and fizz:

There’s often the temptation for employees to choose fizzy drinks laden with sugar, especially when the afternoon tiredness ‘slump’ hits. To tackle this, workplaces can spruce up their water provision by offering fruit to give water flavour, while keeping sugar intake down. Fruit stations make it easy and hassle free for employees to personalise their water, and with a sparkling water tap from BRITA, they can have unlimited access to still or sparkling water with an added flourish of fruit.

5. Quality matters:

With 60% of the UK classed as having hard or very hard water and 40% having soft, it’s important for those in charge of construction and management of office spaces to understand characteristics of their water supply. In fact, quality and mineral content varies between not just regions but even street to street. A hard water supply will taste heavy, chalky and flat, while soft water contains minerals that impact taste too. Water filters reduce the carbonate hardness by eliminating any substances that can influence the taste, appearance and odour.
