FAQs about BRITA consumer products

General

ISCC is a globally recognized certification scheme for bio-based materials and only one of very few certification schemes available. Originally, ISCC was developed to monitor and certify bio-mass materials used to produce bio-fuels and other renewable input for the chemical industry. It has expanded to also include the production of bio-based plastics and the ISCC PLUS certification verifies the compliance with sustainability and traceability requirements. It is our ambition to have an independent verification which provides utmost transparency about such an important topic.

New and innovative materials like bio-based plastics are not always available for our worldwide production. This is why we decided to start with mixtures of bio-based and conventional plastic to ensure that we can always deliver what we promise.

No, bio-based materials are not necessarily compostable or biodegradable. Our bio-based plastics have the same technological characteristics and qualities as fossil-based material. This also means they can be recycled in a regular plastic recycling process, so it is important to dispose them according to the local waste management.

Bio-based plastics are plastics made entirely or partially from renewable, biological sources such as crops and plants. However, we believe agricultural land should be used for growing human or animal food, not feedstock for the plastics industry. Therefore, the innovative bio-based materials we use come only from leftovers from other processes, for example in food or paper production. We think using materials that would otherwise be disposed is a truly sustainable solution.

The bio-based materials are just as durable as regular plastics and often can only be distinguished from fossil-based plastics through scientific analysis. They can be used in products or packaging to replace conventional plastic and therefore play a critical role in reducing our dependency on fossil fuels.

We believe bio-based materials help reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a circular economy, because they are made from renewable sources and are recyclable just like ordinary plastic.

To ensure that our products contain as much bio-based material as claimed, we use what is called a “mass balance approach”. This concept is, for example, also used in the green electricity market or the certified cocoa supply chain. Mass balancing is an accounting method where, in our case, bio-based materials are mixed with fossil-based materials during the production process and then allocated to the final product. All our suppliers are audited and certified according to the internationally recognised ISCC PLUS mass balance certification standard and we ensure the bio-based material is tracked across the entire production process.

BRITA offers an extensive replacement part programme for all products registered with BRITA.

We advise you to always follow your water company’s recommendations.

All BRITA materials in contact with water do not contain polycarbonate and therefore do not release BPA. Additionally, materials used in BRITA appliances are certified food grade quality. This includes migration tests according to EC legislation. Accordingly, there is no migration of forbidden/dangerous substances above values set by EC.

Water filter jugs

For the water filter jug “Style eco”, we use bio-based material from residues from various sources, including the Scandinavian forestry industry, for example in the form of tall oil, which is a by-product of wood processing.

You can clean your BRITA Glass Jug by hand using warm, soapy water and a sponge or in the dishwasher up to 50° C. For ultimate hygiene, we recommend detaching the silicone sealing ring from the funnel and reattaching it after it is thoroughly dry. The silicone sealing ring can be cleaned in the dishwasher, too.

The bio-based plastic for the funnel of the BRITA Glass Jug is based on forestry residue and wood pellets. The raw material we use does not compete with food and feedstock production.

No, the Cool version is designed to fit in the fridge door, while the XL size provides you with a larger capacity of filtered water.

No, the BRITA water filter replacement indicators are provided with a non replaceable battery inside. If your indicator has stopped working please contact our Customer care team.

Both features are electronic water filter replacement indicators that remind you when to replace your water filter.

BRITA MEMO tracks the time since you last replaced your filter. Simply press the button to start the countdown. It automatically reminds you when it’s time to replace the water filter.

BRITA METER uses three factors to determine the optimum time to replace your filter: the volume of water filtered, the water hardness and the time since the water filter was last replaced.

Simply press and hold the start button on the lid until four bars appear on the display and flash twice. Now BRITA MEMO will start the countdown. The flashing dot in the display’s bottom right-hand corner indicates BRITA MEMO is working. The number of bars on the display indicates the remaining lifetime of the water filter in weeks, with one bar disappearing each week.

You should replace your water filter at least every four weeks. This way you’ll enjoy optimum performance from your BRITA water filter.

After inserting a new MAXTRA+ filter cartridge, press and hold the start button on BRITA METER for approximately six seconds. When four bars appear in the display and ‘OK' flashes, you've activated BRITA METER and your MAXTRA+ cartridge is filtering properly.

To determine the remaining lifetime of your MAXTRA+ filter cartridge, simply look at the percentage shown in bars on the display. Flashing water droplets that move successively from top to bottom on the display indicate an active filtration process. When the empty filter cartridge icon flashes ‘NEW', it's time to replace your MAXTRA+ filter cartridge.

You should replace your filter cartridge at least every four weeks. That way you'll enjoy optimum performance from your BRITA cartridge.

Simply press the LED button on the lid to see the current filter status. Each time you use the water filter, BRITA Smart Light tells you the filter’s status with its coloured flashing lights.

Please check what kind of filters you have at home. For BRITA quality comes first and we can only guarantee the optimal filtration for our consumers when using our original BRITA MAXTRA+ filters. Please make sure you only use MAXTRA+ filters.

Yes, most of our jugs are dishwasher-safe up to 50°C. Alternatively, you can wash your BRITA water filter jug by hand using warm, soapy water and a sponge. Please see the instruction manual for more information.

METER and Smart Light: remove from the lid before placing lid in the dishwasher

Water filter bottles

Your BRITA water filter bottle is designed to filter only tap water. As it filters as you drink, anything you would add to the water, such as juices or tea, would be filtered before you drink it. This would affect the taste of the drink and could damage the filter and its hygiene.

Please don't. Freezing your BRITA water filter bottle can damage parts of the bottle or the BRITA MicroDisc water filter.

Clean your products regularly by hand with a mild detergent or in the dishwasher (max. 55° C). If using a dishwasher, disassemble the product.

Before cleaning, remove the BRITA MicroDisc water filter and store it on a clean surface. For hygienic reasons, we recommend placing the BRITA MicroDisc water filter in a clean cup and pouring boiling water over it once a week. If the BRITA MicroDisc water filter floats to the surface, hold it down with a spoon. Remove and reinstall it after soaking for five minutes. Make sure your hands are clean when touching the filter system.

Please don’t. Your BRITA water filter bottle is designed to be used only with water that has been legally tested as safe to drink, such as tap water.

Water filter carafe

Your BRITA water filter carafe is designed to improve tap water's taste for cold consumption. You can also use the filtered water to make hot drinks, but it does not protect your appliances against limescale build-up.

Water filter tap solutions

Careful use of natural resources and waste avoidance are very important to us. That is why filters can be recycled and then reused. You can find all information about the process here.

There is a two year warranty on the taps and all installation components. By registering your BRITA product you receive a free warranty extension of 12 months beginning from the expiry of the original warranty period (24 months from the purchase). You can find more information here.

The lifetime of your filter depends on the filter cartridge you are using (e.g. A 1000, P 1000), the local water hardness, and your individual water consumption. The filter cartridge's lifetime indicator measures your individual consumption and indicates when the cartridge is exhausted.

The filter tap is designed for an easy installation. There are simple instructions and all required parts are included in the comprehensive kit.

If you have further questions about installation, please do not hesitate to contact the BRITACare team.

BRITA water filter taps replace your existing kitchen tap. The tap can be installed in the same standard mounting hole (35 mm). The filter cartridge is placed under the sink and can optionally be mounted using the wall bracket supplied. It can be installed horizontally or vertically.

The measurements of the filter cartridges P 1000/A 1000 (including filter head) are:

  • BRITA filter A 1000 (l/w/h): 109/93/238 mm
  • BRITA filter P 1000 (l/w/h): 119/108/268 mm

The filter tap is a high pressure tap (2 - 8.6 bar) and cannot be connected to a low-pressure boiler.

The installation is simple and takes about 30 minutes, depending on individual circumstances. The installation is possible for someone confident in DIY.

The integrated water filter tap is a high-pressure tap (2 - 8.6 bar). An installation with a low-pressure boiler is not possible, as this might lead to damage from water leakage.

The filter taps have two levers. The left blue lever delivers BRITA filtered water only.  The left handle includes a lifetime indicator for the status of the filter cartridge. The right mixer lever controls regular, unfiltered cold and hot tap water.

This water filter tap features separate water flows and outlets for BRITA filtered water and hot and cold tap water. It is connected to an exchangeable filter cartridge located under the sink. The 360 degree spout rotation offers maximum flexibility for any kitchen sink.

The filter exchange is simple and typically takes 5 minutes, without the need for any tools. Follow these five steps:

  1. Unlock the cartridge using the two blue levers on the sides of cartridge head. No need to turn off your main water supply thanks to an automatic shut off valve in the cartridge head.
  2. Release the pressure using the flush valve. After doing so, remember to close the valve again. Please be sure to have a vessel for water underneath.
  3. Pull out the old cartridge and replace with a new one.
  4. Lock the cartridge in place with the two blue levers.
  5. Finally, rinse through the cartridge until the filtered water runs clear and without any bubbles (at least 1 litre). When the water is clear, your new filter is perfectly adjusted and can be used immediately.

The comprehensive kit supplied, contains a water hardness test strip to determine how hard your water is. You can then adjust the filter head filtration setting based on the test strip results.

  1. The integrated water filter tap replaces your existing kitchen tap. The tap fits with the standard kitchen tap hole of 35mm. The 3-way tap delivers BRITA filtered water with the left handle and regular hot or cold tap water from the right mixer handle.
  2. The separate water filter tap would be in addition to your existing tap. In other words, this would be a second tap, next to your main kitchen tap for filtered water only. It fits into a 25mm hole, similar to most soap dispensers. A hole of Ø12mm is required. However, the separate filter tap also fits into the standard hole of soap dispensers with Ø25mm diameter.

The integrated water filter tap is designed for private households. Household sizes should not exceed 8 persons.

All BRITA filter products help greatly reduce consumption of single use plastic bottles and transport-intensive returnable glass bottles.

The water filter taps are mainly made of 18/10 stainless steel, a material that is durable and recyclable.

All BRITA filter cartridges can be recycled, please go to our recycling page for further information.

mypure SLIM water filter

No, the installation of the mypure SLIM V-MF water filter is also possible without a wall mounting bracket. But the wall mounting bracket does give the filter system more stability.

There are 2 options for assembling the mypure SLIM V-MF water filter under the sink: horizontally or vertically (with the appropriate wall mounting bracket).

The mypure SLIM V-MF water filter reduces 99.999% of the bacteria in mains water (e.g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli).

Clean the exterior regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid any abrasive chemicals and cleaning agents.

Reset the time counter at the same time as you replace the water filter tap cartridge. To do this, press the START/RESET button for 5 seconds until you hear a beeping sound. After this the display shows 360 days and the time counter starts to count down automatically.

The water filter cartridge should be changed after 1 year or 8,000 litres of filtered water.

The batteries included as standard (AA) are for the digital display and should last for 1 year. We recommend changing the batteries every 12 months.

The mypure SLIM V-MF water filter can be used with a water pressure of between 2 and 6.9 bar. It is only suitable for pressure-resistant hot water heaters.

The mypure SLIM V-MF water filter reduces the following substances in the water: chlorine, particles (≥ 0.5 μm), benzene, bacteria (99.999%), microbial cysts (99.95%), metals (> 90%), drug residues, pesticides and hormones (> 90%), herbicides (> 84.2%) and asbestos (> 99.9%). Limescale, on the other hand, is not filtered.

With normal use the mypure SLIM V-MF is designed to last for 10 years – calculated from when it is installed. The water filter tap cartridge should be changed after 1 year or 8,000 litres of filtered water.

Check your filter system regularly for leaks or kinked hoses. The hoses should be replaced 5 years after installation.

The following tools are required for the installation of the mypure SLIM V-MF water filter:

  • Pipe wrench
  • 2x spanners 19 mm
  • Optional: Spanners 22 mm and 26 mm

Installation takes around 15 minutes and does not need a professional. However, if you are uncertain, please book a service technician.
